Making a Love CONnection at Fan Expo 2012!

All kinds of eligible geeked out bachelors and bachelorettes -all under one roof!

Speed dating organizer, 25dates.com, has teamed up with Fan Expo to bring the dating game to you! No really. Sounds a bit out of place when you’re looking over the convention schedule, but to some single pop culture nuts out there, it’s just what they’re looking for. Besides. Where are you EVER going to find that special someone who loves Ocharina music or Doctor Who just as much as you do?

I spoke with Ragna Stamm’ler, President of 25dates.com to get a feel for what to expect at such a uniquely helpful event.

The whole party starts with 25 men and 25 women, all of whom have registered before the dating begins. After everyone has taken their seats the dating begins! Each date lasts three minutes with a bell sounding at the end of each round. During this event all the women remained seated while the gentleman moved from chair to chair, though according to Ragna they do switch it up from time to time. Once the date is over, each Dater (Speeder?) marks a yes or no beside their date’s name on the match card provided, to indicate whether or not they are interested. If there are mutual yeses on the match cards, 25dates.com then emails you the contact information for your matches so you can take the next step.

Pretty clean. Very simple.

Still hesitant about taking part? Not to worry. So far nothing hinky has transpired during the speed dating events. This isn’t a stretch considering everyone’s motive for showing up and taking part is the same and you can just tell by all the energetic chatter in the room that all the dates are going well –and in some cases (judging by the looks on some of the participants face’s) very well! Not a ‘Crazy-Eyes‘ in sight.

Still not convinced that speed dating is for you? Well try this scenario on. After our interview, Ragna informed me that she had been in touch with a participant from last years Fan Expo, a man named David. David met his current girlfriend, Lindsey speed dating at last years Fan Expo. David wanted to come back and visit as sort of a 1-yr Anniversary ‘this-is-where-we-met’ kind of deal –he also had one really important motive, a proposal. So, under the guise of being asked to return to fill out a survey for the company, David brought Lindsey back to room 803 where he, in a room full of hopeful strangers, asked Lindsey to marry him.

I spoke to David and Lindsey after it all went down and while Lindsey was flush and excited she admitted to being quite shocked and obviously, very happy. They both told me that their experience with the event was nothing but positive and fun. David admitted to me that despite all the romantic options that the event had to offer him, he knew Lindsey was the one the moment they sat down together.

So what have you got to lose? Maybe you’ll be as lucky as David and Lindsey are. Congratulations you two!

If you’ve found yourself in a bit of a dating rut, this may be the solution to your problem. Speed dating is like a one stop dating ‘shop’ and you have got to check it out. If you live in the Toronto area there just so happens to be an upcoming 25dates.com event on September 18th. Don’t worry if you can’t make it this time, just check out their schedule online to find a ‘date’ AND a city (upcoming dating events are coming up in Vancouver, Ottawa and Calgary) that works best for you.

With the success of this years event, we’re sure Ragna and the team will be back in 2013. In fact. We are looking forward to it!
