Whoa! Wolverine and the X-Men is the one book that will make you wish there weren’t so many characters in it. It’s kind of like a soap opera, where characters are simultaneously experiencing different things at the same time. Now, in order to follow a soap opera you have to try and focus on one character that interests you and once you have your favourite character you end up following that character until they start interacting with other characters. After prolonged viewing, you’ll be able to figure out what’s going on and over time you’ll start to remember who is who. This comic book is just like that, so don’t feel frustrated if you can’t follow all the characters. All I can say is thank goodness for the informative page on the inside cover that tells you everything before you start reading this issue; it is recommended that you read it, before you start reading this comic book.

Writer, Jason Aaron is doing a swell job at continuing the story in this issue and for those who have been keeping up with this book this might seem like a filler issue. This issue deals with the aftermath of Issue #18, where Broo is shot in the head and now Wolverine and Rachel Grey have to find out who tried to kill him. There are other characters involved in this issue such as Beast, Ice Man, Kitty Pryde, and others. I would suggest following Wolverine, Rachel Grey, and Kitty Pryde who seem to be the major characters in this book. It’s easier this way until you get a handle of the plot and who who’s in the book.

Synopsis: There are so many things happening in and out of the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning. One of the students is on death’s door and the faculty must try to keep them alive and to find who did it!  Also, one of the teachers is on the outs, a new one must be hired. Who will it be? Who is the new student at the school?

DeadpoolGood: Aaron juggles the different characters quite well, by keeping the characters focused on one main problem. You are able to see how each character is affected by the problem. It’s great to see this kind of story telling that has both plot and character development. For Issue #19, Aaron introduces tons of Marvel characters outside the X-Men Universe such as Blade and Deadpool. It was funny to see these characters that provide comic relief to the sad aftermath of Issue #18.

Nick Bradshaw (penciler of Wolverine & The X-Men) really impressed me by taking the time to draw different faces for each character. Even minor characters were portrayed with their own unique face. I’ve noticed that sometimes artists or pencillers take the easy route and characters with the same features. It’s not their fault. Some artists/pencilers just aren’t as versatile when it comes to drawing different characters. However, Bradshaw was able to give each character their own uniqueness. A great example is a new student named Eye Boy whose body is covered with eyes. When you compare this minor character to another X-Men character such as Toad, both characters look different from one another. It’s quite impressive to see that Bradshaw is versatile.

Storm comicBad: As a reader, it’s easy to become frustrated with so many characters in one issue. Especially, if you’re just getting into this book, I would say try to focus on one character and try your best to get through the issue. Once you have reached the end take a break and come back to it for a reread from start to finish. It’s one of those books where you need to read previous issues to know what’s going on; The first page of the comic book informs you of what’s going on, but there are so many characters in this issue. There are tons of new minor characters coming into this issue as new students and it becomes quite confusing by the end of the issue. The only new information you take away from this book is the plot of Issue #19. This should be all that you get out this issue for now and that Storm SPOILER ALERT is back. Another character, you’ll have to follow for the next issue.

If I had one suggestion for new readers, I would say reread the issue again if you don’t understand what’s going. For those who have been keeping up, this is a filler issue so don’t waste your time reading it unless you like the comic book a lot. Please spare yourself as you’re only going to waste time reading the reactions of the multiple characters.
