With the X-Men long gone after the events of X-Men: The Last Stand, what is Wolverine to do with himself? Empire held an exclusive interview with the director, James Mangold, about the new Wolverine movie called The Wolverine. Here’s what Mangold had to say:

“Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all. Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there’s a tremendous sense of isolation for him. That’s something that for me was very important, that I land in a very specific place in his timeline. I wanted to be able to tell the story without the burden of handing it off to a film that already exists and having to conform to it. The ideas of immortality reign very heavily in this story and the burden of immortality weighs heavily on Logan. For me that’s such an interesting part of Logan’s character that is nearly impossible to explore if you have a kind of league or team movie.”

The powerful elements that make Wolverine who he is why so many fans love him. Those elements being his immortality and his lone wolf attitude. He really doesn’t need anybody to support him, he is actually best on his own. So, Mangold is really taking a step forward with Wolverine’s character. From this film, we might really see these elements take a toll on Wolverine as he ventures alone in this world.

So literally, where in the world is Wolverine? According to some of the set photos released, Wolverine is in Japan fighting ninjas and has a new love interest named Tao Oakmoto. Japan has some of the most beautiful nature aesthetics and is known for its hot springs, mountains, and cherry blossoms. On top of that, Japan is also well known for its historical and modern architecture. Mangold is really creating an aesthetic appeal that will make audiences really appreciate the movie. It might be another Marvel actionfest bu Mangold wants to create an visually pleasing action flick for everyone to enjoy.  Seriously…this movie is going to look great!
