Say it ain’t so, Marvel!

warning. This contains spoilers for the new Captain America: Steve Rogers #1.

I mean just in case you follow my blog and also have no idea what’s going on with Steve Rogers. I mean it is comic book so “something stupid” is generally what is going on with any character at any given time, but this time, it’s pretty stupid.

Spoilers below.

Just finished reading the new Cap issue and I’ve got to say, besides the “twist” at the end, it’s not really that impressive. I don’t really care about the plot much and for a first issue I should be more invested in it than I am. I should care where the characters are, what their motivations are, who they are and what the focus is, but I care for none of this, really. Without the whole Hail Hydra nonsense it would be insanely anti-climatic, which I suppose is the point of something this “dramatic” and “game changing”. Plus I don’t know what all the zingers are doing in there, but they really put a wedge in what is supposed to be at least somewhat serious. They all fall flat, even having a knocked out bad guy commenting on the fact that they’re flat, so I guess the comic is somewhat self aware.

It has to be at least mildly aware of something right?

Art is alright, standard comic book look, nice colouring, but the blue in Steve’s suit is kind of a dingy gross blue. That might be personal preference but it’s still kind of muddy to me. Sharon is good and so far the only likeable character, as the two red, white and blue sidekicks have a lack of personality other than “whoa Cap is such a cool guy and I want to be just like him” which kind of makes me feel like they’re trying even more to make you hate the new Steve. Mission accomplished I guess?

It makes absolutely no sense for Steven Rogers to be Hydra at all, even if you take out all his history and focus on this issue as a stand alone. It doesn’t make sense in the narrative, but I suppose future issues will flesh this out. That is, if it sells well enough to do so. I feel like the drop from issue 1 to 2 will be major and 2 to 3 will be enough to reevaluate the series. Have you seen the outrage? People are boycotting it. People are very angry. There is a lot of justification in their outrage I think, but I had to read it for myself. I was expecting something a lot more, I don’t know, impactful? But after reading it I just went, well that’s dumb. Sort of like the finale to a crappy show you don’t know why you still watch.

I will probably keep reading out of curiosity to see what happens, because I’m honestly wondering if this story can hold it’s own after the whole “steve rogers is hydra” reveal. Without that, and considering the average writing and average art I do not think this issue would be even remotely talked about by most people. It seems like a huge ploy to get people talking about the comic, and not an interesting story that someone wanted to tell. I mean, I don’t think most people when given the opportunity to write Steve Rogers would go “oh yeah let’s make him a Nazi”, at least not if they liked the character. That is just me though. I will never understand people who think a good, kind character is inherently boring. I always say: never trust a man who thinks Superman is boring. Good and just and kind and honest are not boring traits, they are traits we should all have.

But f*ck being nice; that’s boring as sh*t. You know what’s super cool and edgy and will sell comics? Nazis!

Ugh.

To be honest I think the whole “Sarah Rogers is a member of Hydra” narrative could be so much more interesting. Watching Steve having to come to terms with that fact and rising up from something he completely understands why his mother was drawn to? Understanding her struggle and limited options, but choosing to not be a part of that anyway? That’s an interesting story to me. Not, Well my Mom joined them so I totally did too! There’s years of history of Steve fighting Hydra and evil and seeing the damage they do to people. I mean how do you retcon that?

Also Red Skull has Charles Xavier’s brain/powers so with all the red flashbacks a bunch of people (me included) think this is the real reasoning behind Steve’s sudden but not that inevitable betrayal. False memory implants or some nonsense like that. Either that or it’s just reaaaaaaally lazy writing. Like super lazy.

But guys, what if the good guy was a bad guy?!?!??!!?

3/10. Not very impressive, feels disingenuous and like it was written purely for the controversy. It’s like a clickbait article.

Nice Guy’s Mom Had Minimal Options And You Won’t Believe What He Grew Up To Be!

A Nazi, apparently.
