12 Days of Christmas: Artist Edition, #4 – Curt Swan

On the Fourth Day of Christmas… it’s Curt Swan!

The man who drew more Superman stories than any other artist in history. A master of illustration, rather than design, Swan depicted Superman with both power and grace, exploring the nuances of body language and expression.

At his peak in the 1960s and 70s, his art exemplified the ‘quiet’, subdued style of DC Comics that contrasted the wild, exaggerated template established by Jack Kirby at Marvel.

His art may have appeared antiquated as the decades rolled on, but the deceptively simple style that Swan employed made it impossible for him to ‘hide’ imperfections in his figures: everything had to be perfect, and it was.
