The countdown continues. Check out day 2 of our 12 Days of Xmas special.

The master of design and storytelling in 20th Century comic books. While Will Eisner invented much of the language of graphic storytelling, Alex Toth had full command of the figure and the page to tell his story. Using the a minimal amount of detail, Toth composed pages of striking design, each panel beautiful in it’s own right.

Another artist that ventured into the more lucrative field of animation, Toth is perhaps most familiar to the general public as the creator of Space Ghost, The Herculoids, Birdman and the Galaxy Trio, and Dino Boy in the Lost Valley. He also provided character designs for the beloved Superfriends cartoon, the first animated appearance of DC’s Justice League of America.

A vocal critic of ‘pretty pictures’ that didn’t tell a story, Toth worked until his death in 2006, and was one of the last voices of the Golden Age to lament the loss of comics’ early innocence.
